At the beginning of the year, the new version of the Estonian Economic Activity Classification EMTAK 2025 came into force. The transition to the new classification will take place gradually in the register with the submission of annual reports. The exceptions are sole proprietors and limited partnerships, which do not have a obligation to submit annual reports the register. They can submit their field of activity with a change application in the e-Busiess Register portal.

The Centre of Registers and Information Systems (RIK) recommends that entrepreneurs pay attention to the previously selected field of activity when preparing their annual report during the upcoming period for submitting annual financial statements, as its code or name may have changed in the new classification. When indicating a field of activity in the report, transition tables are helpful, where you can see whether the entrepreneur's previously selected field of activity code has changed and what its equivalent is in the new EMTAK.

Sole proprietors and limited partnerships can bring their field of activity into line with the new EMTAK 2025 classification by submitting an application for a change in the e-Business Register. These legal entities must also submit an application if the field of activity code has remained the same according to EMTAK 2025, in order to confirm its compliance with the new classification. If the application for a change entry for a sole proprietorship or a limited liability company contains only a change in the field of activity, the application is free of state fees.

Today, 22,000 out of 316,000 entrepreneurs have already indicated their field of activity according to the new classification of activities. The most frequently chosen field of activity according to the new EMTAK is professional science or technical activities, followed by electronic communication services, programming, consultations and other information activities.

In addition to the e-Business register, Statistics Estonia uses the fields of activity of entrepreneurs in the production of official statistics. Statistics Estonia has announced that it will adopt the EMTAK 2025 version flexibly and with a delay. This means that this year the statistical main field of activity will still be displayed in eSTAT according to EMTAK 2008. The person completing the questionnaire does not need to change this.
